How to Accurately Track Your Competitors’ Prices with Google Sheets

In this section, we will shortly show you how you can easily track your competitors’ prices with Google Sheets.

First, let’s look at things you can do with the Google Spreadsheet tool:

  • View products listed on your competitor’s online store that you don’t have
  • Compare product prices per category
  • Remove the colour code letters from given product names
  • See which competitor’s products contain specific, valuable keywords

2 Google Sheets Functions to Accurately Track Your Competition

Google sheets is another great way to monitor your competitors. With the tool, you can track their prices, and devour data directly from websites, CSV files and many more.

ImportDATA

The Google Sheets ImportDATA function will pull in all the information you need from a TSV or CSV file. This is useful for absorbing data directly from particular web tools or services.

The Sheets IMPORTDATA function has just one required parameter.

As you can see it’s a very simple function. All you need to do is insert the following text in a cell:

=importdata(“URL”)

Google Sheets will ask you to put the site’s URL into the space between the quotation marks. After you put it, just click Enter and the data will be pulled from the site.

ImportXML

The IMPORTXML function requires two parameters.

All you need to do in the “Import” part is to create 3 columns with headers like “Product ID/Name”, “Product Price” and “URL”.

The ImportXML function needs two parameters as shown above. It’s the URL and the XPath query.

To apply this function, go to the Google Sheets field and type the “=” sign. Then type the function (IMPORTXML). In the parameters section implement the URL that you want to import data from. It should be your competitors’ exact website URL from which you want to get the intel.

Next step: The “xpath” parameter.

The xpath is nothing else but XML path language – querying language used to select nodes within the data.

The first part of it – with the two slashes (//) – tells the tool to search through the document until it finds the variable we put after them.

So you want to put exactly what you want Sheets to find after the slashes.

If you want it to find the headline of the product – “Smart Speaker” in the example below – highlight it and use the “Inspect Element” HTML option to enter the browser’s developer tool. It will automatically open and highlight the element (node) you need to put after the slashes we talked about earlier.

For this particular example it will look like this:

//h1[contains(@itemprop, ‘Smart Speaker’)]

All you need to do is to put it after the “;” sign in our ImportXML function so it will look like this:

=IMPORTXML(“URL”;”//h1[contains(@itemprop, ‘Smart Speaker’)]”)

Repeat this process for each product that you want to monitor and you’re good to go!
