Women in E-commerce – rising opportunities, challenges, influencers
- 29 August 2022
Women in E-commerce – shattering the glass ceiling
To this day the e-commerce branch has been considered the man’s world. Men make up the bulk of most of the rankings and play major roles in e-commerce enterprises. This may come as a surprise, especially since 70-80% of consumers purchasing are women. The problematic aspect of women”s absence in e-commerce may be examined in two ways.
First of all, there is an appealing advantage of men running the highest managerial positions. In 2018 less than 5% of the Fortune 500 was run by female CEOs! On the other hand, there is also a disparity in male and female e-commerce ventures, such as online retail where disproportion in access to the internet is to blame.
Luckily, in the last few years, the situation has been changing. In these post-pandemic times, many retailers were compelled to convert their business strategies to increase online retail or even to revise it completely. However, this unfortunate (as it might seem) situation opened up opportunities for female entrepreneurs. The Lockdown hustle has brought some good, and as a result, many women decided to bring creativity into play and give e-commerce a try.
Why do women choose e-commerce?
Simply put, the reason why women lean towards the e-commerce industry lies in its flexibility. There is just a no better way for work-life balance, especially when family life is at stake. The possibility of running a business from home made this industry more accessible and worth considering for many women. Also, one of the most appealing e-commerce features is its low entry threshold which is the lure when it comes to self-employed women or female microentrepreneurs. Apart from some basic equipment not much is needed to join the e-commerce community. Running an online store is as simple as using a website creator, and choosing the best e-commerce platform. We covered this topic in one of our previous articles. All of these mentioned steps may be accomplished without any advanced technical skills or even costs, as plenty of e-commerce tools are available free of charge.
Mentioning the importance of social media cannot be missed. The growing Human-to-Business sector made selling online easier than ever. Instagram, Etsy, and Facebook groups became a perfect place for commercial development where all social and business needs can be met. In fact, social selling, as it’s called, became a core of women’s online endeavors, giving them the chance to create, sell and be a part of a particular community at the same time.
E-commerce rising opportunities for women
The global expansion of the technology industry has increased career prospects for women worldwide. However, the most concerning issue is so-called “cyber-sex discrimination” which applies to both developed and developing countries. Sadly, it starts much earlier than in the workplace. Apparent neglect may be noticed in the early education stage when girls do not obtain the same professional training as their male colleagues. This imparity is escalating in Asian, African, Latin American, and Middle-East countries, although the future of e-commerce belongs to these nations.
As reports show, the cooperation between e-commerce platforms owners and women may turn out beneficial for both sides, and deliver a significant profit. To reinforce this trend we should start encouraging women to undertake more online merchandise, especially in emerging markets. This includes both, enlargening the number of female e-commerce retailers, as well as growing the sales figures of women-own companies.
What should we do to encourage women to e-commerce?
- Equal internet access
Even though in the present days we are surrounded by technology, and access to the Internet has never been easier, a gender gap between male and female internet usage is still an ongoing issue. According to the latest reports, the difference between male and female internet users is 12%, and this number even reaches up to 33% in the least developing countries. That is why to encourage women to become a part of the e-commerce industry, enabling chances should be the very first step. - Women-oriented training and support
This step needs to be taken predominantly by e-commerce platform owners as well as governments.
Breaking the barrier of fear can be done just by professional support, especially when it comes to being behind with technical skills. Luckily, there are more and more women-oriented communities eager to help, yet still, there is room for improvement. - Sex-dissagreted data
We can point out the twofold importance of collecting sex-disaggregated data. First, the regular processing sex-dissegrated data will expose improvement-requiring areas. Most importantly though, acknowledging women as a separate category will help in recognizing female entrepreneurs as a visible, valuable, and profitable part of the e-commerce world. - Inspiration
There is hardly a better encouragement than showing women other female entrepreneurs they can look up to and draw inspiration from to prove themselves in the e-commerce field.. That is why we decided to put the spotlight on the top female e-commerce influencers. We hope this will help women overcome hesitation, and kick off with their e-commerce ideas.

Summary
Women in e-commerce certainly color outside the lines and simply cannot be labeled. Some of them hold high managerial positions, some use their creativity to build their e-commerce business or help others in growing online.
Nevertheless, we shouldn’t forget that when it comes to e-commerce women are still in the minority. Lots of things are yet to be done, especially when talking about LDCs and emerging markets.
We hope this article shed some light on the question of women in e-commerce, their situation, the raising opportunities, and the real obstacles they need to overcome every day.
We also look forward to adding brand-new names to this list next year.
